Freedom of Speech

I read this article on CNN just a few minutes ago and I was really excited to get a chance to blog about it. Emma Sullivan, a high school senior and leader in Kansas is standing up for herself and her first amendment rights. After a school trip to the Kansas state Capitol, Emma decided to write a tweet regarding her dislike for Kansas Governor, Sam Brownback. Having only 65 followers, she never imagined in a million years that it would cause any controversy. Within days of the post on Twitter she found herself being disciplined by the Principal of her high school. Brownback's staff had taken measures to see that Emma was punished and they expected an apology on her behalf. Being an 18 year old individual she was fully aware of her first amendment right to free speech. She declined to write a letter of apology and stays firm in her opinion and true to her beliefs. It's absolutely ridiculous that something like this is being blown out of proportion and its such a waste of time. Everyone knows that there are much more efficient and beneficial things Brownback's staff could be doing. In my personal opinion, this is a true representation of a toxic leader. Brownback is overly concerned with what is being written about him and his own personal image. Being the governor of Kansas, he should put his job and duty as a prominent political figure before his own personal spats with critics. This whole thing just gets me worked up! I respect Emma Sullivan's decision whole heartedly.

Thanks & Gig'Em!
